AliceArtemis Cosplay

For years, one of my dream cosplays has been Leia's original Senatorial gown from A New Hope. For some reason, I had kept it on the back burner until I heard of Carrie Fisher's passing in December 2016. The shock of losing someone who I admired and loved so much sparked me to finally get this costume done and make it in her honor.

I'm relatively new to the Star Wars family, so finding out that huge costuming guilds like the Rebel Legion and the 501st Squadron exist and do charity events made me really want to join one! I knew I wanted to submit my Leia costume for Rebel Legion so I followed their guidelines, along with the approved tutorials on their website. I found two that helped me tremendously:

  • An overview page outlining the whole costume by Kay Dee Collection.
  • A full dress tutorial made by P&S Costume Creations
I started off by getting white knit fabric, specifically the White Jet Set knit from Joann Fabrics. The knit gives the dress a nice drape and breathability while also being easy to care for (no ironing, yay!) I was worried the knit fabric alone might be see-through so I used a white bedsheet for lining fabric. One big bedsheet was more than enough for the lining, and I believed I used 4 yards for the outer fabric.

It was a LOT of fabric. So much fabric...

I based my pattern off of the one on P&S's tutorial. Since the dress is basically one huge piece of fabric, it took up most of the space in my living room. I folded the fabric hamburger wise and then again hot dog wise (I really don't know how else to describe it lol). I did this twice, once for the outer fabric and once for the lining. I then pinned, sewed, and hemmed the two parts together to make the body of the dress.

The dress sewn and hung inside out on my dress form.
The collar was the most daunting part of the dress, as I've never made one before. I made a mock up with a scrap piece of blue fabric and then pinned it to the dress. Once I made some alterations, I cut out pieces from the lining and outer fabric.

Adding the hood was fairly simple, as I just stuck to the tutorial. I added hooks and eyelets to the back and then pinned and sewed the hood to the dress.

And here's the final result!

Since the lining is two parts, you can see the seam slightly through the outer knit fabric. Luckily, the belt covers it when it's on so you don't see a thing!

This is just a quick compilation of all the progress shots I took from my time making Leia's Senatorial gown. Next time - her metal belt!

Hello and welcome to my first non-introduction post on this blog!

So where to begin, where to begin? Let's start with con crunch for Supercon 2017!

One of the characters I've been working hard to finish is Tracer from Overwatch. I've wanted to cosplay her since I found out about the game, and while she is not the main character I play as, she is definitely my favorite.

I knew that I couldn't make a leather jacket with my time/budge/current skill set, so I decided to thrift one! Originally I bought one from Depop that was a more accurate color, but it had a weird fit so I ended up purchasing a different jacket with a more accurate fit from my local Goodwill - except this time, it was black and dark brown leather. 😓 Fabric paint to the rescue!

The original thrifted leather jacket. Note the weird alternate patterning of dark brown and black leather.

I ordered a 4 oz bottle of Angelus Leather Paint from Dharma Trading Co online. I was recommended this brand by popular cosplayer Maid of Might and this purchase was my first time ordering from Dharma and using Angelus paints! Overall, I'm really happy with how they came out. The 4 oz was more than enough for me to get 2 layers (3 in some sections) of paint on the jacket.

I choose to get Cognac, which is a shade that's slightly more redder than Tracer's accurate color. (According to Blizzard's Overwatch website, it's #8c684e on the Hex Color chart.) I spent a long time on Dharma's website comparing 3 shades of brown, but I figured that under harsh convention center lighting, the cognac would be able to give the jacket a rich color that would stand out. And considering that her leggings are yellow/orange and her Chronal Accelerator chest piece is bright blue, something with a orange-y red undertone would compliment it nicely.

After giving the whole jacket a new paint job, I decided that the clean look wasn't good enough for me. So on to detailing we go!

Hand painting all the wear "stains" to mimic weathered leather.

I tried to replicate as much of the weathering and tear marks on Tracer's jacket as much as possible. Of course, it doesn't looks exactly alike because it's not torn leather, but it does look like rips and tears from a distance. I went in with a small brush and light brown acrylic paint.

As for the patches and the fur lining, I glued and hand sewed both of these to the jacket. Not very exciting stuff, but very painful for my fingers. This leather jacket was really not about me sewing fur and patches on it.

Tracer's jacket is done, yay! I'll make another post detailing my work on her harness at another time.

Hi everyone!

As this is my first official post on this blog, I decided to start off with an introduction - but one with a twist! I got some questions from a Cosplay Tag originally meant for YouTube and I'm gonna use them to talk about my cosplay "career." Let's begin shall we?

1. What got you into cosplay?

I can't remember who or what exactly got me into cosplay, but in 2012 I started getting into the Doctor Who fandom and as I was looking for stuff related to the show, I found pictures of people dressing up in costumes and I thought that was so cool! As a kid, I never really liked wearing Halloween costumes because they were so itchy but once I realized that you could make your own, I decided that it was worth a shot! I also found it as a good way to learn some new skills.

2. How long have you been cosplaying?

Technically since 2012, but I didn't make my own costume or go to a convention until 2013.

3. How many cosplays have you done?

It's hard to say! I think it's been about 8?

4. How do you get your costumes?

So I try to make whatever I can for my costumes, especially if I can't find it or it's waaay to expensive for me to buy already-made. However, because I'm still learning how to sew, anything that I can find ready-made I will buy and then alter (i.e. pants, jackets). I'll alter the garment by adding on it, tailoring it to my body, dyeing it, weathering it, etc. I've decided to try to use already-made garments/items found from thrift stores so I can give new life to used/old objects.

5. What was your first cosplay?

My first cosplay was the 11th Doctor from Doctor Who!

6. What is your favorite cosplay?

As of now (July 2017) my favorite cosplay is Belle in her blue village dress. It's super comfortable to wear and I always get a good response from people, especially children, when I wear her at conventions. As a Disney fan, I love being a princess and embracing my Disney love outside of the Disney parks.

7. What is your favorite thing about cosplay?

I love being about to put on a costume after all the work that went into it and being like "Look at this thing! I made this thing!" As an artist, I'm always trying to find ways to create and cosplay is a great outlet for me to do so. I also love being recognized as a character and finding other people in that fandom as well through my costume.

8. Do you have any cosplay pet peeves?

When my sewing machine refuses work, when convention prices are ridiculously high, when people in groups bail out the last minute, when people lie about the origins of their costumes.... ha ha ha... so many.... *cringes*

9. What's your most recent cosplay?

My most recent cosplay is Princess Leia's Senatorial gown from Star Wars: A New Hope! This one has been very special to me as Leia was one of the reasons why I wanted to get into Star Wars in the first place and that I love Carrie Fisher so so much I need a whole other blog post just to explain why. I also really hope to join the Rebel Legion costuming guild with her!

I'll put a real photo of my actual costume once I take some! I promise
So there you have it! An intro into my past as a cosplayer. Truthfully, I don't expect this to be a very interesting read but at least you have a bit of a background on me. Yay!

Thanks for reading ♥
